NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — The U.S. Drug Administration has been conducting studies on beef due to a bird flu outbreak.

The H5-N1 virus has been found in at least 34 cattle herds across nine states, but the USDA said the supply is still considered safe.

Albert Shaw, a Yale medicine doctor who specializes in infectious diseases joined News 8 to discuss the details of the bird flu outbreak.

Shaw said that the closest state to Connecticut that this flu was found in, was Ohio. It’s been found in milk, cows and even one person in Texas.

To monitor the rise in cases, the USDA has been sampling beef, the muscles of sick cows and performing temperature experiments on cooked ground beef.

Shaw also spoke about the possibility of a bird flu vaccine. To see the full interview with Dr. Shaw, watch the video above.
